The Light of the Amazon
Armed with two boats, a few volunteers, and a literal boatload of Bibles, the Bible Society of Brazil ventures frequently into the mouth of the Amazon to heal, feed, and share the Word of God with the isolated people and villages inhabiting it.
The boats bring doctors, dentists, veterinarians, and a seemingly endless stream of friendly faces. The project’s goal is to serve 3,428 people over the next year in 11 villages along the Amazon. In addition to toys for children and help for adults, medical facilities are brought to the people, turning the boat into essentially a floating hospital. Checkups and diagnoses for adults and children have proven life-saving, and children are taught how to brush their teeth, what not to eat, and other simple ways to keep themselves healthy that many take for granted, but that these children have never heard before.
Elizabeth Diniz Dos Santos, a 40-year old woman affected by the Light of the Amazon, says it has changed her life. “The publications I’ve received are great, and my children love them. When I read the Bible I learn to have faith. It was very nice when the boat came since it brought doctors medicine and Bibles. My children, my husband and I were assisted, and we can’t afford a dental treatment, which is very expensive. If it wasn’t for the boat, we would never have received this treatment.” A community leader in one village told a group that “I believe we all have a mission, and it’s for the good of other people.” The Light of the Amazon has adopted this mission, and is bringing the goodness of God into the teeth of the jungle on a regular basis.
