Vagla Nation of Ghana
Paul Deleka, the FCBH Supervisor, brought the listening session to the Vagla people in the Northern Ghana village of Grupe. It was a surprise that one of the first people to respond to the FCBH message was a well-known man, Sunwialei Kponkpogri, a priest about to take over as Chief Priest. Here is his story:
“Something strange happened one night after I learned that I would be inheriting the office of Chief Priest. The spirits took me from my house, wandering in to the bush so far that i didn’t remember from which direction I had come. I heard aa voice warnimg me about some danger ahead, but i didn’t know whose voice it was. Fear gripped me. I was confused. I continued to wander, lost, not knowing which way would lead me home. When I finally got home three days later, I rested and was given food, water and a bath. I was told when I awoke that hte gods were preparing me for my ministry. I became very disturbed and wondered whether I should accept the responsibility of Chief Priest.
Sometime later, I heard some noise coming from an area where a group of people were listening to a tape player. I strolled over to where the people were and heard a cassette playing in our language - Vagla. When I got close enough, I heard the speaker on the tape say that whoever wanted to be great should eb like a child - humble and obedient. The speaker, I was told, was Jesus, and he spoke with such authority. At this point I knew this was church business and there was no reason for me to continue to listen, but something made me stay.
Was it Jesus who was speaking to me in the bush and warning me? The message was clear - each of us is a lost sheep and Jesus had come to deliver us. I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. I became more interested as the discussion went on not wanting it to end. The more I attended these listening sessions, the more I was convinced it was meeting my need.
I told Paul Deleka that I wanted to accept this Jesus and have the joy and assurance of salvation. He asked me if I was ready to renounce the gods that I was serving, and I told him I had come to realize that Jesus was greater than those gods.
I would prefer to serve the greater one. When I said this, I realized a boldness and joy had captured me. I felt that even if I died today, I would die a happy man.
I had thought all along that the story of Jesus was made up for school children’s books. Now I am convinced he is a real man who came to offer me life to its fullest. There is no possibility I will go back to the gods I served before. I am very happy that I had the opportunity to be saved.”
Sunwialei is now the leader of the FCBH listening groups in his area, helping others know that the Great Shepherd is not only aware of the Vagla people, but has come to deliver them. In just one month, the Vagla listening groups increased from 5 to 66!
