What Does the Bible Say About Mothers?

Then he [Jesus] looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

OK, wow, the subject of “mom” hits deep for me. I feel tender even as I’m typing this. I love my mom so much, and she made such an impact on me spiritually.

My mom’s spiritual life - her intimate relationship with God - was such an inspiration and model for me when I was growing up. Many early mornings I’d walk downstairs and into the kitchen, and my mom would be sitting at the kitchen table with a candle lit, her Bible out and her journal on the table. And I’d walk over and get a hug and then go on my merry way. Those mornings made such an impression on me - I could tell my mom’s relationship with God was “personal” and intimate.

Anyway, my mom’s favorite passage was Proverbs 3:5-6, and that became one of my favorite passages, too. To this day that passage almost instantly makes me tender; it’s part of the bond I have with my mom and it of course always makes me think about my mom.

Well, that’s a bit about me and my mom … how about you and your mom? I look forward to reading about your experiences!

    Dear Shareyourstorynow.org Team:

    1. Throughout the Bible, we are called to “Honor thy father and thy mother.” (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16; Matthew 15:4; Mark 7:10; Luke 18:20; Ephesians 6:1).

    2. The verse which reminds me of my Mom is Matthew 10:37-38:
“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me;…and he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of me.”

Inasmuch as I am the worst daughter, who broke the Chinese traditions to leave home to study in Japan–enemy of war–after high school, and refused the match-maker’s arrangement for my marriage then, my Mother understood my ambitions, and, with a broken heart, set me free “to take up His Cross and follow Him.”

    3. My Mom influenced me spiritually with her very last breath, across lands and oceans–from Hong Kong–making sure that my father and siblings would relate to me: “Tell Ngar-Ngar (my childhood nickname) that I love her.” –Despite my lack of filialness.

    4. As a blessed mom of five boys and five girls,
the Bible taught me about being a mom is found in Luke 2:51-52: “…and His Mother treasured all these things in Her heart. And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”

This passage illustrates that dear and tender as were the ties which bound Jeus to His Mother and Brethen, yet those which bound Him to His disciples were even more tender and sacred, that we ought to forsake father, and mother and friends, and houses, and lands, to be His followers.

Thank you for your timely gratitude-provoking questions.

    May GOD ALL MIGHTY Bless each and all of you outstanding Team, all Mothers, Surrogate Mothers and Grandmothers;
    GODSPEED!

    Mary Sun.

I, was at my local church page looking for a prayer request slot, then , I stumbled onto this. It could not have come at a better time. you see May6′th was my moms 64′th, birthday. Well it would have been. She was taken from me in October of this past year “2007″.Then there is the Mothers’ Day thing . It is a tough month for me. I don’t remember her favorite scripture. I’m not sure that I ever knew it. I really wish now that i did. I am a mom of three and a nana of one. My favorite scripture to read over them is “Psalm 91″. Also, the prayer of Daniel in the book of Daniel. For all their secret sin, for the new Isreal coming. To usher in the forgiveness and humility of heart needed to get through such a great a time as this. My, mom brought me to Christ in prayer. Long live her heart and soul and I love you Mom. I’ll see you when we all rise. FOR ALL WHO READ THIS: I, pray, beloved, above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in good health, just as thy soul prospers,3 JN.2. May God bless you all richly, this” Mother’s Day” and always, GLORIA GAFFNEY ‘CLEARWATER

My mother to me is the epitome of Proverbs 31. She has taught me how to be a wife, sister, and friend. I remember seeing my mom more often than not on bended knee praying over family members, members of our church, friends and she would take her time with it. It wasn’t a prayer that was rushed or something that she felt she had to do, she loved to do it. I remember thinking that I wanted to be the same way. Even today she will send me scriptures on note cards in envelopes and will write notes on them, depending on what my husband or I are going through.

    Happy Mother’s Day!!

  5. Melinda Fields says:

my mom was an unhappy person when i was growing up. she was in a marriage she didn’t like. but stayed in it to raise her children. she read the Bible to stay sane. she went to church to find friends. church was fun for us kids because at home my mom was either crying or yelling. at church my mom was sweet and kind. she was well liked. i didn’t get it. when i grew up i was diagnosed bipolar. it’s not too hard to see where it came from. my mom is a very charismatic person and sometimes i make the mistake of believing she knows what a mom’s love is. in heaven we’ll see.

  7. DORIS E PARKER says:

MOM, EVEN THOUGH YOU NARE RESTING WITH JESUS, YOUR PRECIOUS MEMORIES WILL BEALWAYS REMEMBERED.HER NAME WAS DORIS R. FLOOD. DAUHTER, DORIS E PARKER.

  8. Alexis says:

My mother has been my friend, defender, and toughest critic! I thank God for her influence in my life.

  9. Deborah Waite says:

God is a good God! My mother is mentally ill and hated me for a period of time. She wrote me scarey and hateful letters. But my Christian friends and I prayed for her and she is now stable and stays in an AFC home. She stays 1-2 days every 2 weeks with me now and our relationship is growing!

  10. Michael says:

    My Mother,
She reminds me of Mary the mother of Jesus and her name happens to be Mary. She tells me how she became a christian at the age 14 and she’s 78 now.
Living in the Appalacian Mountains of Eastern Ketucky in the 50’s and 60’s wasn’t easy.

She gave birth to twelve children and raised them during a time without all the modern conveniences.
She’s been a true of example of a christian. I remember when I was just a child and all through the years how my mother would kneel by her bedside
and pray for hours. Crying and praying to god to watch over her twelve children. I would carefully listen until I heard her call my name and pray for me and my heart would be over joyed because I knew that god was watching over me.

She’s been a good christian loving mother and has served the Lord for 64 yrs. She still pray’s by her bedside and sometimes I can hear her pray and my heart is moved by her expression for the love of god, and her stong desire and conviction to help a lost soul.

I believe with all my heart, that if my mother don’t make it to heaven, then nobody will. I don’t think nobody could have a greater love and compassion for the Lord than she displays. She always reminds me that the lord loves me and for me to always keep him in my heart and talk to him.

I don’t think she was named Mary by accident, I think it was destiny by the shining example she has been for all those around her.

After reading some of the other comments I feel even more blessed and fortunate to have such a mother. I pray for those of you that have been less fortunate and your circumstances and just try to remember that god is not only our saviour,
but he also is our Father, mother, sister and brother, he is our everything.

    Many Blessings,
    Michael Baker

  13. Corinne Ruiz says:

I know that Mother’s Day has now passed but I still wanted to share what my mom means to me. My mom, where do I begin?

Well, I guess I begin with the day Jesus asked me if I would like to be Irene and Victor’s daughter? I probably asked many questions about them and Jesus answered all of them but did let me know that my life would not be an easy one. I still answered “Yes, I want to be their daughter, their firstborn.”

I was born 11/5/52 to the most loving parents in the world. My life was great, my parents loved me, so why would Jesus say my life would not be an easy one.

Then on June 30, 1982 our lives, especially my mom’s, was shattered. My 22 year old brother Manuel died in a car accident. Looking back now, I remember Mom being so strong, yet crying so much and for a very long time. I didn’t know, nor could I feel the intensity of her pain. All I could do was hug her and let her know how much I loved her.

Our family was never the same. My mom kept moving forward and working, even though it was very hard for her to start each new day. She knew that she still have five children who were still alive and needed her.

April 22, 2004, my 14 year old daughter Olivia suddenly died. Again more sadness and pain; but now I knew the pain my mom felt and what she went through. When my daughter died, my mom would cry and say to me, “If I could take this pain from you, I would”. This is how much love a mom as for her child. She has been my strength, my inspiration and has given me the courage to live on.

Imagine the pain of Mary seeing her son dying on the cross.

“Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.”

When Jesus therefore saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!”

What must Mary have felt? Her son, her love for her child. There is no greater love than that of a Mother for her child.

I have been blessed and honored to say that I am the daughter of Irene, the most beautiful person in the world. Thank you Jesus for allowing me to be her daughter.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my mom, Irene.

    God Bless all moms.

    Corinne Ruiz
