“Sean Smith: God is Faithful [3:25]”
For you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
Sean Smith shares about his CD, Real. Sean says God realizes that we aren’t “good enough,” but he calls us because he is faithful and is who he is.
MR. SEAN SMITH: One of the songs on my CD is, well the whole CD is titled “Real,” and the idea for that kind of came out of just the fact that I was not being real. I was living a life that the world dictated, and basically because I allowed the world to dictate it. And just got into a huge tug of war with God over the direction for my life and what I was to do. And when, you know, when He came to me and said, you know Sean, I want you to do music and I want you to encourage people through music and I want you to sing songs about Me. My honest gut reaction was, you know, Lord, are you kidding me?
I can’t do that. You know, You know my failings. You know I’m the last person that needs to be doing that. And He did the most genius thing, which I think is, you know, we wouldn’t expect anything less, but He actually came back to me and He said, you know what, Sean, you’re right, you can’t. You’re not good enough. You are flawed beyond belief in the world, you are flawed. But I am who I am and the verse that led to the song is 1st Thessalonians 5:24 and it says, “The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.”
And you know so the Lord is not calling us to this life of abundance based on the fact that we’re good enough. He’s not calling us to this life based on the fact that he took a poll and a vote and everybody voted for me or for you. He is not calling us to it because somehow our resume sifted to the top of the pile. He’s calling us to it because He is faithful and He is who He is. And the song is titled “Called Because I can” and the first verse says, “Cast away the fear that is your anchor, surrender every pain you bear alone. All you have is all you’ve ever needed. Trust Me now and make My glory known.” The chorus is, “Bring to Me the heart that you have hidden, bring to Me what you don’t understand. Follow as you should. You weren’t called because you could, you were called because I can.”
And that has really impacted my life in a great way because I mean how often do we see things that we feel we can’t do or we see something we want to do but suddenly, you know, our inadequacies just start to cry out, you know, and tell us that we can’t. But God is faithful and if we’re willing just to be faithful in response to His faithfulness and take steps of obedience then He’s the one who does it. You know? He’s the one who steps out and says, you know, I am who I am and I’m going to do it for you.
