“I Pray the Verse Over My Baby”
O LORD, you have searched me
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD.
You hem me in—behind and before;
you have laid your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
Rachel T. writes:
God spoke this verse to me when I was a teenager, and it has continued to impact and shape my life even now.
It always amazes me how God knows everything about us, that even the things that we think we hide so well from him, he already knows. I made it a point to memorize all of this Psalm. It amazes me how the writer gets detailed enough to even think of how God formed us and knit us together in our mother’s womb!
He knows everything about us, and loves us anyway … unconditional love, love that knows no boundaries, a love that never fails. A love that sent him to a cross to die for our sins, a debt we couldn’t pay.
Now that I’ve got a precious life growing inside of me, this Psalm has become even more alive and relevant. I speak this over my baby’s life. I want these verses to come alive to this baby as it grows; I want it to know that a loving God knew everything about it even when it was still forming, and to know what a wonderful maker he is, how he cares about every aspect of our lives, no matter how big or how small they are.
What an amazing God we serve!

Rachel, thanks for sharing! I love that you’re praying Psalm 139 over your baby! I’m so encouraged by that. And your baby is so lucky to have you for a mom!
The more I read about emotional and spiritual development, the more I understand that even a child’s experience in the womb is important in his/her development. Somehow children in the womb can soak up love and be strengthened and developed by love. Amazing!
You’re giving your baby such a huge gift, Rachel. Blessings to you and your family!
