“Jill Parr: Bible comes alive as adult (2:23)”
Jill Parr shares how Bible verses she learned as a kid have come alive to her as an adult. Really inspiring!
JILL PARR: The latest CD that I did, “Me Again,” I actually did write a song inspired by the Bible. I grew up a Christian kid in a Christian home. I was there 12 times a week. I took pride in memorizing all of my little Bible verses, but it’s funny how they don’t really come to life to you until you become an adult and get yourself in situations where you need answers. And I think that as Christians we forget that we actually have this tool to go to and to help guide us. Interestingly enough, last summer our pastor was doing a series on just stories of the Bible, because they were integrating our children into the church body as a part of regular Sunday-morning service, and they were just exploring these little stories of David and the Giant, and all these things. And I did this wonderful thing that I hadn’t done in a long time, which is I went back and picked up my Bible, and in my mind the stories of David was just kind of like, “God, could you use somebody like me, like the sheepish kind of”– and when I went back and saw that he pursued the Giant, he went after him and he said, “Today, I come to you in the name of the Lord,” and I just was like, “Wow, these stories have all new life and meaning to me.” So as we were writing the material on the new CD, I actually just wanted to write a song about the miracles of Jesus and how we have that same power in us today, that he left with the disciples before he ascended into Heaven, and I think it was just such a great reminder for me personally to remember that, you know, being created in His image, we have that authority and that power. So the song is called “The New Normal,” and it’s just talking about Jesus, how he was such a controversial fellow, you know, but his message was just so plain and simple, of love, healing and kindness.

Jill, thanks for sharing! At the end of your sharing, you mentioned that Jesus’ message was really simple … that it was a message of love. That struck me because it seems that as I journey emotionally and spiritually, Jesus’ message becomes simpler and simpler to me. And His message does seem to be all about love. I wonder if His message will become even simpler for me in the future — can it get any simpler than it is? Probably!
