“I Knew God Loved Me”
O Lord, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord.
You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!
Harriet Clark writes:
When I was four years old, I was seriously burned on my entire left leg when my drunken father pushed me into an open fireplace.
One Sunday at church, while the bandages were still on my leg, the pastor of the church announced that “little Harriet Clark is going to sing for us today.” I didn’t know I was “going to sing” and neither did my almost saintly mother. But, I got up from my seat and went to the pulpit, and as the pastor knelt beside me, I sang “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so” — on key and with no accompaniment, much to the amazement of everyone.
Psalm 139 says that God knows all about each of us even before we were formed in our mother’s womb; that He knows our thoughts; that He lights the path along our way; that His night shines brighter than the day.
I have always known since being so seriously burned, that God did love me … that he was always watching, loving, guiding, caring for me. There has never been a doubt that he would look out for me because he sent his only begotten Son to save me and everyone from our sins.
My wish is that all people could know this kind of love — the kind of love that only God can provide.

Harriet Clark, thanks for sharing your story. I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like to suffer that kind of trauma. My heart is heavy for you in that.
I’m inspired and touched by the deep way you seem to experience God’s love and companionship. And thanks for reminding me about Psalm 139 — what a powerful and intimate Psalm!
Thanks again, Harriet Clark. Blessings to you!
