VICKY BEECHING: The Bible is probably my main inspiration for most songs, because my passion is really to write worship songs for the Church, so I figured that the best way to do that is to put as much common material in as possible. I think whenever you have lyrics that have scripture in, there’s an instant connection because it resonates with everyone. You know, it’s God’s Truth and we all know it, so it’s an easy way. So probably the most successful song that I’ve seen connected with the Church has been one called “Yesterday, Today and Forever,” it’s out of Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” I just kind of started with that verse and then branched out from there, just thinking about the faithfulness of God, you know the fact that He is the foundation beneath our feet. And this song talks about Him being Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and I just wanted to give it that feel of a song that kind of leans a bit on the Old Testament as well as the New Testament Jesus. So that verse in Hebrew was really the whole kind of foundation of the song. The verse continues to really mean a lot to me.

Vicky, thanks for sharing! As I sat with words of Hebrews 13:8, that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever, I was touched by how profoundly comforting that verse and idea is. It helps me to “rest,” knowing that I don’t have to constantly try to figure out life, God or myself. Jesus doesn’t want me to anxiously play a game with Him, but “rest” in Him, rest in the reality that his unconditional love never goes away or changes and that it is the very ground of my being.
Does anybody else have any thoughts about Hebrews 13:8, or about Vicky’s story?
