Reminder to Read

But I have spoken to you plainly and have tried to remind you of some things. God was so kind to me!

[Romans 15:15 CEV]

Natasha writes:

It struck me this week, just how complacent I had become about reading the Bible. Growing up in a Christian family, going to a Christian school, and attending church every Sunday, has meant that over the years I have read a lot of scripture - or at least - am familiar with a lot of the stories. There have been many times where I have decided to read the Bible cover to cover… but somewhere after Chronicles I give up. As for the New Testament, it struck me this week that I’d read some of the letters and all of Matthew but only really bits of the other gospels.

I’m the sort of person that needs to be challenged, so I’m loving our Singles Ministry Bible Study group, where we are challenged to read the same 5 chapters of Mark every day for 5 days each week. The words of our Women’s Retreat speaker, Deanna Giles, resonated with me as she spoke about the Bible being like food: we can’t live without it, and we should “eat” (or read it) at least daily; and water: the more we drink, the more we want to drink. My challenge to read Mark 1-5 each day has increased my thirst to read more, so I’ve started with Acts.

My pastor spoke about the importance of reminders this Sunday, and gave each person a Post-It Note, on which we had to write something that God was reminding us to do. Mine states “Read ME!” and is now stuck to the front of my Bible.

Reading the Bible really is important - it provides vital nourishment to me every single day. Without it, I find myself hungry.
